It's no secret that we are massive lovers of music here. We've even highlighted the connection between music and fragrance. Another commonality between these two sensory art forms is that they have both been researched for use as vibrational medicine or healing. Findings indicate that further understanding of how music and scent can stimulate nervous system activity could have implications for developing mind-body-spirit therapies.

Sounds wild. Let's explore a few theories ...

Everything is energy with a vibration

Even if you have no conceptual understanding of what vibrations are, you have certainly felt them. A vibration is a state of being, the atmosphere, or the energetic quality of a person, place, thought, or thing. Perceiving “vibes” is intuitive - we all have the ability to pick up on another person’s energy. Certain people have contagious energy to draw us closer while others make us want to keep our distance. Another example is turning on the news and feeling heavy while then we see a video of a baby animal and we suddenly have hope for all mankind.

Everything in the universe is made up of molecules vibrating at different speeds. This includes trees, humans, animals, rocks, thoughts and emotions. Human vibrations are composed of everything from physical matter to the way we communicate our thoughts. In simple terms, some molecules vibrate faster and some vibrate slower; there are higher vibrations and lower vibrations.

When you are "vibing" at a higher level, you feel lighter, happier, and more at ease, whereas lower vibrations feel heavy, dark, and confused. Almost all spiritual traditions point the way toward higher realms of consciousness, and scientific studies (like that of consciousness research and spirituality author Dr. David Hawkins) have even quantified the vibrations of different states of being to create a scale of consciousness.

Music as an instrument for energy healing

All life exists within a sea of vibration, and rhythm is fundamental to all of life. Seasonal, lunar and solar cycles, and the resonant electromagnetic field oscillations of our planet make up the symphony of rhythms in which life on Earth exists. Rhythm is the fundamental characteristic of music.

Music has been shown to modulate several cardiac and neurological functions and to trigger measurable stress-reducing pathways, to modulate blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, EEG measurements, body temperature and galvanic skin response; alter immune and endocrine function; and ameliorate pain, anxiety, nausea, fatigue, and depression.

... just a few reasons to turn up that dance music.

Applications of aromatherapy

Like the use of sound as a technology for the healing and balance of the spirit, mind, emotions and body, aromatherapy has been used for these same purposes since ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, and India. For millennia fragrance has been used in religious rituals, for spiritual cleansing and medicinal purposes, and of course for cosmetic indulgences ...

Aromatherapy is the inhalation and topical application of essential oils (or the pure essence from plants). As a form of alternative medicine, it has been used for to enhance physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. 

When a person inhales an essential oil that scent is carried by olfactory nerve cells in the nose to the olfactory system which then sends the aroma to the brain, namely the limbic system, the house of emotions and emotional behavior such as intimacy, passion and sex. Immediately, and depending on the oil, you may begin to feel more alert or more relaxed. You may feel excited and aroused. You may feel the release of negative emotions and/or the soothing of muscle tension. Mood enhancers like serotonin and endorphins get released.

Our sense of smell is 10,000 more powerful than any other sense and the recognition of smell is immediate. (Other senses like touch travel to the brain via the spinal cord.) Smell is also the strongest link to the subconscious mind and also to our collective unconscious mind where memories are stored.

The high vibe of plants and essential oils

There have been studies and claims that the energy of living things can be measured, including the vibrational frequency of essentials oils. The frequency of rose essential oil is claimed to be as high as 320 MHz and sandalwood 96 MHz. A healthy human body is between 62-70 MHz. It is said when someone is in meditation or prayer, the frequency rises.

Whether it's all just new age woo woo that lacks scientific proof, the concepts presented to us have been thought provoking and fun to scratch the surface in our exploration of the healing power of art forms like music and fragrance. 

There can certainly be no harm in becoming aware of your own vibration and the levels of what surrounds you in your environment.
