Pascal Gaurin is one of the most respected perfumers of his generation - known for creating fragrances that are emotionally resonant, technically masterful, and entirely unforgettable.
The nose behind many of the most loved and bestselling fragrances in the ST. ROSE collection, Out Of The Blue, Crazy Love, and Jack of Hearts. We first met the native Parisian while he was living in New York through our shared love of music and its influence on our creative process. Now residing from the Dubai creative offices of internationally renowned fragrance house, IFF, Pascal has spent decades shaping modern perfumery through his work, collaborating with some of the world’s most influential luxury and niche fragrance brands.
His approach to scent is deeply intuitive. Pascal experiences synesthesia - he hears music as he composes - allowing rhythm, tone, and harmony to guide the way notes unfold on skin. From the effervescent high notes, to the melodic base notes that hum softly underneath, and emotion always leads. The result is fragrance that feels alive, expressive, and profoundly human.
“We wear a fragrance in order to float above the ground, to be raised up a little. The only difference between music and perfumery is that you can listen to music in order to feel melancholic, to experience a form of sadness. Perfume is never like that. Nobody wears perfume because they want it to hurt them. You wear perfume to give yourself a boost, to be lifted up. You want to feel a little bit more.” - Pascal Gaurin
Some fragrances whisper. Others sing.
When we began work on Crazy Love, we were drawn to the idea of scent as an emotional frequency - something felt as much as smelled. Enter Pascal Gaurin, a perfumer who doesn’t just compose with ingredients, but with art, memory, and music.
In this conversation, Pascal takes us inside his creative world: how pomelo became the luminous heart of Crazy Love, why contrast is essential to desire, and how his synesthesia allows him to hear fragrance as it comes to life. There’s a subtle nod to Van Morrison, an exploration of love as instinct rather than logic, and a shared belief that perfume, like music, connects us to something invisible, yet deeply felt.
This is a story about following a feeling wherever it leads.
