ST. ROSE Takes East Hampton With Violet Grey

Some rooms make you want to stay in them.

Violet Grey's new East Hampton boutique is one of those rooms, and it isn't an accident. The space was designed by Rafael de Cárdenas, working with Violet Grey managing partner Farin Samnani, and their brief was explicit: not a store. "Rather than a traditional retail environment," de Cárdenas has said of it, "we conceived the store as a place to linger, discover, and return to repeatedly over time."

It shows. Twelve hundred square feet on Newtown Lane that read less like retail and more like the house of someone with immaculate taste and no interest in telling you so.

We spent an afternoon there this summer. It was one of our favorite days of the season.

The Room Itself

The details reward a slow walk.

The brass shelving is hand-hammered, fabricated by Chicago metalworkers Atelier Artizan and inspired by the sculptural work of Diego Giacometti. Samnani has described the thinking behind it as bibliophilic - the idea that a beauty shelf might be assembled the way a library is, each object having earned its place rather than simply having been stocked.

It is, as the design press has rightly called it, a jewel box.

We were very glad to be in it.

We Left A Mark

Every guest who came through that afternoon left with their bottle engraved. Complimentary, done on site, while they browsed.

There is something particular that happens when a name goes onto glass. A fragrance is already the most personal thing you can wear - it lives on your skin, it changes with your chemistry, it becomes yours in a way nothing else in a beauty routine quite manages. The engraving simply makes that visible. It turns the bottle from a product into an object, and eventually into an heirloom. We have customers who still have their first ST. ROSE bottle on a shelf long after the last drop.

Violet Grey built its reputation on the Violet Code - a vetting process that puts every product in front of makeup artists, dermatologists, aestheticians, and editors before it is allowed anywhere near a shelf. Founded by Cassandra Grey in 2012, the company has spent over a decade being the place where only the best in class products are carried.
